5 Easy Herbs to Grow From Seeds In Your Garden

Growing fresh herbs directly from seedlings is easy. Best of all, starting herbs from seeds can help save you money because the need for purchasing expensive pre-grown herbal plants from gardening shops is not necessary. Some of the easiest herbs to start from seedlings are dill, cilantro, lemon balm, basil and borage.

Dill

Starting dill from seedlings actually causes this plant to grow deeper roots, which helps make this herb flourish more because it is strong and healthy. In addition, this herb tolerates the cold, wet days and nights of spring well, which means this herb is a hearty one. However, you need to be careful which dill you choose to grow because some take longer to grow than others.

The most popular one that is grown is Fern Leaf Dill. It grows rapidly and within weeks, you start seeding dill leaves that are ready to harvest. Dill leaves are wonderful for making tasty dill pickles, pickled salads and relishes, and for adding a bit of unique flavor to salads such as pasta, potato, seafood and egg.

Cilantro

Cilantro is an herb that offers a two for one harvest because the leaves and the seeds produced from this herb can be useful for adding huge flavor to spicy cuisine dishes. In fact, the seeds produced from the cilantro plant are known as coriander. Coriander seeds can be ground up to create a rub or used whole to add flavor to stews, soups and roasts.

This herb, however, hates growing in the heat and grows best in the early spring. If you want to use the leaves of this herb, harvest it early when the leaves are tender and sweet. If you want seeds from this plant, wait until it begins to seed.

Lemon Balm

If you are looking for a super easy herb to grow, with minimum maintenance grow some lemon balm. Lemon balm is a member of the mint family and tends to grow and spread quickly from seedlings. Best of all, this herb grows in cool and in extreme heat temperatures.

In fact, as soon as this herb has fully matured, you can cut it down; dry the first harvest of lemon balm and the herb will just grow right back so you can harvest some more lemon balm before autumn hits.

Basil

Basil makes the list for one of the easiest and fastest growing herbs. Within weeks of planting the seedlings in early spring, basil shoots up and produces leaves, which you can cut and add to all kinds of delicious cuisine dishes. In fact, the more you cut basil the more this herb grows back.

However, this herb does not like extreme temperature change. The best type of basil to grow is Greek basil. It is a hearty herb, which tends to be forgiving if you forget to water it or seem to cut it down too much.

Borage

Borage is an herb also known as the starflower that prefers growing in the cool beginnings of early spring and autumn. The herb hates the heat of summer, but it is easy to grow and looks beautiful in flowerbeds and in herbal gardens. This herb tends to be showy with light purple flowers and tiny little seeds, which are harvested and used to add flavor to food, as a garnish to cuisine dishes and to create herbal teas. The seeds of this herb are best sown into the ground in early spring. Once the herb takes off, it is fast growing and does spread.
