5 Reasons You Should Get Food Sensitivity Testing

Food sensitivities are no joke. If you think you may be affected, here are five reasons you should get food sensitivity testing:
1. Food sensitivities are a common problem.

You may be surprised to find out that, unlike true food allergies, food sensitivities are a common source of troubling symptoms like headache, diarrhea, abdominal pain, sinus congestion, wheezing and eczema.  A food sensitivity blood test called MRT® (Mediator Release Test) can test up to 150 foods for an individual’s reactivity to each food item.

2. It is difficult to discover food sensitivities on your own.

Without laboratory testing, food sensitivities are difficult to pin down for several reasons. The first is that food sensitivity reactions are usually delayed reactions; meaning that sometimes you will feel bad soon after eating a reactive food, but most of the time there will be a time delay of hours to days before your body expresses the symptoms of the sensitivity.

This can be confusing since you can’t be sure if the headache you have one morning is from the milk on your cereal that day or because you ate pasta with gluten yesterday.  The second difficulty lies in the fact that one reactive food may cause several different symptoms. For instance, eggplant may cause you to feel achy all over one day and simply tired on another day.

A third issue is that truly allergic individuals tend to have only one or two reactive foods, while those with food sensitivities tend to develop reactions to multiple foods. In fact, once you develop a food sensitivity, it increases your risk of developing several more. These factors make it difficult for you and your health care provider to sort out which foods you need to avoid.

3. Food additives cause sensitivity reactions.

If you are not eating all organic, fresh, whole foods in their natural state, then you are likely ingesting food additives that may cause you to feel bad.  Many of today’s foods have chemical additives such as Polysorbate 80 or FD&C food colorings.  Many food additives have been shown to cause food sensitivity reactions such as headache or brain fog.

The Mediator Release Test (MRT) evaluates 23 food chemicals and additives to see if they cause inflammatory mediator release in your body. Laboratory testing is a quicker and easier way to know what additives you absolutely need to avoid.

4. You may be sensitive to your favorite foods.

You probably know that wheat, dairy and soy often cause food sensitivities, but you may be surprised that healthy foods such as blueberries, garlic and olive oil can lead to the same ugly symptoms.  That’s right, your Superfoods may be making you sick, especially if you are eating them frequently.  By testing these foods, you can know if you need to take a holiday from them and give your gut time to reset your oral tolerances.

5. You can create a custom detox for your body.

With laboratory test results in hand, you can then choose foods that tested NON-reactive to your system. You leave out those foods that cause inflammation in your body.  This is the ultimate detoxification plan.  While the reactive foods are out of your diet, your symptoms have time to clear, your immune system can stop causing inflammation in your body, and you will be healing from the inside out.  Many foods can be reintroduced and tolerated just fine once healing has occurred.

Food sensitivity testing has improved over the years. The most accurate and comprehensive test available is the Mediator Release Test. MRT® test kits are available from YVOLV Nutrition.
