5 Simple Homemade Conditioners for Damaged Hair

Between sunshine, wind, hairdryers, perms and exposure to air pollution, life can be pretty tough for your hair. Instead of those silky, lustrous locks you are dreaming of, you can wind up with hair that is brittle, frizzy or damaged with broken ends. Fortunately, there are things you can do to fight back, such as keeping hydrated and eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables so that your hair can be nourished by the vitamins and minerals they contain. There are also some simple, homemade conditioners you can whip up right in your own kitchen that will leave your hair lustrous, silky and manageable.

Banana-Avocado Conditioners

  • ½ medium banana, peeled
  • 1 avocado, peeled and pitted
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp. honey
  • 1 Tbsp. extra virgin olive oil

Mash avocado into a paste. Add half of the banana and, the honey, egg, and olive oil and process in a blender until soft. Apply from the roots of your hair to the tips, avoiding the scalp. Leave the conditioner on for 10 minutes then rinse and dry. The banana and avocado will moisturize your hair while the olive oil will leave it shiny and the honey will add a sheen.

Vinegar-Egg Conditioner

  • 2-3 egg yolks
  • 8 oz. olive oil
  • 2-3 Tbsp. honey
  • 4 oz. vinegar
  • 5 oz. lemon juice

Whisk egg yolks thoroughly then add the vinegar and lemon juice and whisk again. Add oil and honey and process in a blender until it is a thick paste. Apply this to the tips of the hair and leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. The egg yolk and honey are natural conditioners, while the olive oil strengthens your hair and the vinegar will help treat hair loss.

Banana Hair Mask

  • 1 banana
  • 1 egg
  • 3 Tbsp. honey
  • 3 Tbsp. milk
  • 5 Tbsp. oil

Blend all ingredients into a smooth paste. Apply paste to hair from root to tip, then leave on for 15-30 minutes before rinsing. All five of these ingredients are wonderful natural conditioners.

Yogurt Hair Mask

  • 1 egg white
  • 5-6 Tbsp. plain yogurt

Beat egg white til smooth, then gradually add yogurt and continue to beat until mixture is smooth. Massage into hair and cover with a shower cap, then wash with a mild shampoo after leaving it in for 15-30 minutes.

Oils
Oils are a great way to re-moisturize and nourish your hair because of their fatty acids and high vitamin content. Avocado or olive oil are two of the most popular: simply apply it to your hair from the roots down, cover with a shower cap and let it set for around half an hour before shampooing and conditioning as usual.

These are all simple conditioners to make with ingredients that you likely already have around your own home. However, they are among the most effective conditioners for your hair and will quickly undo the damage that everyday life has inflicted on it, leaving you with the healthy, glossy locks that you love.
