Today we’re bringing you the lowdown on what your morning cup of coffee can do for you. For many of us, coffee has become an essential part of our daily routine – whether it’s the first cup that wakes you up, or the one that gets you through the afternoon. However, coffee is much more than just a caffeine injection – and there’s a lot more to it than meets the eye.

We’re bringing you 5 interesting, and in some cases surprising, health benefits of drinking coffee that won’t leave a bitter taste in your mouth!

Calorie burning benefits

Coffee has been linked to increased calorie burning during and after exercise. According to a study of athletes who consumed the equivalent of 12 ounces of coffee before exercising, there was an average 15% increase in the calories burnt during and up to 3 hours after exercising. Not only that, but those who drink one to two cups a day can also help increase their metabolism, whether they’re exercising or not.

Improved brain function

Drinking coffee causes the brain to produce a number of mind-enhancing chemicals, as well as preventing the production of others, like Adenosine. This makes way for the brain to produce other neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine, which are linked with increased brain function and improved reaction times. There is also evidence to suggest that coffee can even improve your long-term memory!

Lower cancer risks

Another surprising benefit of drinking coffee is its link to reduced risks of certain types of cancer, in particular liver and colorectal cancer. Studies have revealed that regular coffee drinkers have a reduced risk of cancer, with over 40% for liver cancer and up to a massive 60% reduction for prostate cancer.

Nutrients and antioxidants

Amazingly enough, coffee could be giving you more of your Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of nutrients and antioxidants than some of the fruits and vegetables you eat. Just one cup of decent coffee contains 11% of your RDA for riboflavin, 3% of your RDA in potassium, and 2% of your RDA for magnesium and niacin.

Lower risk of depression

Coffee has also been connected to lower rates of depression, particularly in women. This link is down to the fact that coffee increases the production of brain chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin. Scientific research shows that people who drink two to four cups of coffee a day have been found to have a reduced risk.

With all these health benefits in mind, you can feel better about indulging in your daily fix. Whether you’re drinking coffee to keep alert and focused or just enjoy the taste, you know you’re getting some extra benefits thrown in.
