Fluoride is a mineral that is found in water and many food items. It is used as an ingredient in toothpaste because it prevents tooth decay. It slows the breakdown of the enamel and it speeds up the remineralization process. It promotes the production of new enamel crystals that are bigger and harder.

Fluoride has many adverse effects. It can be toxic to the body, and according to a study conducted in 1990, fluoride may cause cancer. This is the reason that you should avoid fluoride intake.

Here are the most effective ways to avoid fluoride and detox your body:

1- Stop drinking tap water

Tap water is the top reason behind fluoride intake. So, to avoid fluoride, you must stop drinking tap water and consume the following types of water instead:

  • Filtered water – Water filters that use deionizers, reverse osmosis, and activated alumina help remove fluoride from the tap water. So, to avoid consuming fluoride, it’s best to purchase a water filter or consume filtered water on a regular basis.
  • Distilled water – Distilled water is safer than tap water. Most distillation units can remove most, if not all fluoride from the water.
  • Spring water – Spring water contains low levels of fluoride so it is generally safer than tap water. But, some  bottled spring water still has high levels of fluoride so it’s best to check the label before you buy any.

2- Avoid fluoride gel treatments

Most dentists would recommend fluoride gel treatment to their patients because it makes the teeth stronger. But, it has a lot of side effects, too. It can cause allergic reactions such as rash, itching, dizziness, and heavy breathing. It also has high acidity so it can cause vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, and even kidney problems. It can even harm your reproductive organs and may cause infertility. So, make sure to avoid this and ask your dentist for an alternative treatment.

3- Drop the processed foods

Heavily processed foods such as corned beef, burger, and French fries contain so many harmful chemicals and preservatives. These foods also contain fluoride. Processed meats such as bacon and ham also contain high amounts of fluoride. So, instead of drinking soda and eating heavily processed foods, opt for fresh and natural treats such as fruits and vegetables. If you must consume meat, avoid the processed ones. So, instead of eating bacon, try grilled pork chop instead.

4- Consume organic wine and grape juice

Many vineyards use a pesticide named cryolite which is made of fluoride. This is the reason why most wines and grape juices contain high levels of fluoride. So, to avoid fluoride, it is best buy organic wine and grape juice. It is also best to consume organic raisins, too.

5- Avoid green tea

Green tea is known for its weight loss and beautifying benefits. It also has a lot of other health benefits, too. But, the sad thing is green tea contains a fair amount of fluoride. But, if you must drink green tea, it is best to opt for tea bags that are made of young leaves. This variety has lesser fluoride.

6- Do not consume fluoridated salt

We all heard of the iodized salt, but yes, there are a number of fluoridated salt in the market today. Before you buy your salt, make sure that it does not contain fluoride. Salt from Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, France, Spain, Slovakia, and Switzerland contain high levels of fluoride so avoid them.

To avoid fluoride intoxication, make sure that all the foods that you consume contain minimal, if not zero amount of fluoride. If you must consume products that are filled with this mineral, check if there are any fluoride-free alternatives. Remember, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
