7 Herbal Remedies for Autumn Dryness

What do allergies, asthma, and flaky skin have in common? Dry weather indicative of the changing seasons. Fall weather hit the lungs and intestine the hardest, but there are some easy, natural ways to prevent some of the most common health problems people face this time of year.

Normal methods to deal with the symptoms caused by autumn dryness:

Cold and flu symptoms are the biggest result of autumn dryness, but also one of the easiest to catch.

  • Clear your sinuses of mucus buildup with a neti pot. Neti pots usually come with a natural mixture for sinus relief, or you can use sea salt and water.

You may not realize that autumn dryness also affects your bowels. Dehydration leads to less water reaching your stools, making them harder. This can lead to constipation and anal fissures – small tears that bleed and cause discomfort. To make matters worse, many people drink less water going into fall because it is not hot enough to encourage constant hydration.

  • Drinking plenty of water will benefit your body all around. Avoid too much spicy food and caffeinated beverages.

Along with the above tips, here are some common herbal remedies to help with symptoms related to autumn dryness:

  1. Coltsfoot Root (Tussilago farfara) is available in a variety of forms from capsules to tea and helps with lung problems, coughing, and intestinal issues.
  2. Horehound (Marrubium vulgare) is a powerful cough and mucus combatant with a great reputation for its safety and reliability.
  3. Ginkgo Biloba is a popular traditional Chinese medicine with powerful anti-inflammatory properties. It’s great for asthma, allergies, and coughing. Ginkgo is also known for its ability to improve memory and concentration, making it popular for returning college students trying to overcome fall symptoms.
  4. Mullein (Verbascum thapsus) not only helps clear the sinuses, but also has a soothing effect. It helps relieve sore throats, stomach cramps, and pain caused by heavy coughing. Other benefits include controlling diarrhea and stimulating coughing up phlegm.
  5. Nettle (Urtica dioica) is a popular anti-allergen that can be combined with other herbs like comfrey, horehound, and mullein to battle asthma. It is also rich in silicon, potassium, and iron.
  6. Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) works with the adrenal glands and promotes healthy mucus production and nasal blood flow. It’s a popular remedy for treating lung congestion from colds, flu, and allergies. Some people have an adverse reaction to licorice, and studies in deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) extract have reported the same benefits without adverse effects.
  7. Lobelia (Lobelia inflata) is a powerful herb for fighting asthma, but one to be handled with special caution. Lobelia acts as a stimulant similar to nicotine, making it a popular smoking cessation and antidepressant. However, too much can lead to toxicity, and a variety of adverse reactions have been reported. Lobelia should not be handled by women who are nursing or pregnant.

It’s important to drink enough water daily, especially in the dry autumn weather. Besides, there are some hugely hydrating foods which are almost more than 90% water by weight you should eat as well:
