9 Ways to Melanoma Risk

image

In the year 2000 Melanoma Risk was was one in 75 persons, today it’s one in 50.  There are about 80,000 new melanomas a year, adding to this growing challenge.(1)   Most people are not even aware that everyday habits may bring them closer to Melanoma Risk.

Our Risk for Melanoma Increases When….

1-When we take common photo-toxic drugs or use fragrances and then go into the sun, we increase our risk for Melanoma.  These can include Antibiotics, Diuretics, Ibuprofen, Diltiazem for HBP and Accutane for acne.(1)

2-A daily diet of mostly processed foods can cause a pro-inflammatory internal environment which can weaken our immune system.   “Parasites (including viruses, bacteria and yeasts) weaken the body, steal important nutrients and in some cases produce debilitating toxins.   Some have been linked to blood disorders and cancer.”(3)   Researchers have found that both men and women with the highest blood sugar levels were more likely to have malignant melanoma and pancreatic cancer, than those with the lowest blood sugar levels.(13)    Making a conscious decision towards small “bite size steps” to include foods high in antioxidants such as fruits and veggies, can create positive long-term results. (4)

3- Using sunscreens that contain Retinyl Palmitate (which is in 41% of sunscreens,) may actually increase the growth of cancerous skin tumors and lesions.(12)   Most sunscreens aren’t safe or protective against skin cancer and have a long list of toxic chemicals difficult to pronounce.   Today more than ever it’s important to be aware of carcinogenic sunscreens that both line the retail shelves of grocery stores, as well as big box stores.  Several studies have actually confirmed that appropriate sun exposure actually helps prevent skin cancer and is our best source of vitamin D.

4- A topical application of Benzoyl peroxide as a treatment for oily skin and acne can put you at risk for Melanoma.  Skin tumor-promoting activity of benzoyl peroxide, is a widely used free radical-generating compound.(5)  Using organic lavender or lemon essential oils are safer and less toxic.

5- Exposure to pesticides in farm workers has been associated with melanoma.  Some of the chemicals these workers are exposed to are:  Agent Orange; asbestos; carbon tetrachloride; formaldehyde; PAHs; PCBs; and more.  Pesticides, carbon tetrachloride and formaldehyde exposure have been associated with intra-ocular melanomas.  At Publication, the database lists 105 studies linking pesticides to cancers.  These include cancer of the colon, lip, ovarian, pancreas, as well as melanoma, multiple myeloma (cancer of the plasma cells of bone marrow) and neuroblastoma (cancer of the nerve cells).(6)

6-What we put on our skin is absorbed into the bloodstream.   A study has found that topical applications of moisturizers such as Dermabase, Dermovan, Eucerin Original Moisturizing Cream, or Vanicream could increase skin cancer risk.  Mineral oil has been linked to no less than 23 different diseases and health problems.  Arsenic, Coal tars, Mineral oils, and Ionizing radiation are linked to skin cancer.(7)    Our skin eats, so why not choose to feed it organic skin care products?

7-“Oral melanoma clinically mimics many other pigmented lesions of the oral cavity.”  Ask your Holistic Dentist to include an oral cancer examination, as a part of your yearly visit.(8)    You can avoid addictions to tobacco, occupational exposure to formaldehyde(9) and alcohol.(10)   Oral health does not include chewing gum.  There is nothing natural or sexy about chewing gum.  It can be made from toxic chemicals that in no way contributes to your digestive health nor is good for your oral health.(11)

8-There’s a study that shows a connection between Viagra and melanoma.  This study published in JAMA Internal Medicine found that men who used Viagra were 84% more likely to develop melanoma.(14)   Knowing all side effects from medications is recommended.  Some young men have experimented with Viagra, even though it was unnecessary.

9- Toxic Tattoo Inks are linked to melanoma.  Why would anyone want to directly inject cancer into their skin, which can travel into other organs and tissues?   Cancer has cut so many lives short and destroyed brilliant productive minds.  Its time to rethink tattoos

Unfortunately “Skin Cancer” caused by many chemical exposures can take 20- 50 years to manifest.  Why wait?  Learn the Risk Factors, Make Simple Changes and Prevent Melanoma Today.
