The Benefits of Organic Hemp Milk and How to Make Your Own

image

When most people think about milk substitutes, it is probably soy milk, rice milk or almond milk that comes to mind. Indeed, these dairy substitutes are all extremely popular with vegetarians, vegans, and those who are lactose intolerant or allergic to traditional cow’s milk or its products. However, these are not the only substitutes that people can consider. Although it is not as well-known in the United States, hemp milk and other edible hemp products continue to attract a greater gathering. This is most because people are becoming aware that hemp milk does NOT contain THC’s, active compounds in the marijuana plant which can produce the effect of getting “high”. And while it is not yet legal for American farmers to grow hemp, its seeds can be purchased legally from Canada or Europe and these are showing up in more and more health food stores across the country. The health benefits of hemp milk as well as a recipe for it to make at home are discussed below.

What’s in a Glass of Hemp Milk?

There is a reason why so many health nuts are going – well, nutty – over hemp milk. The number of nutrients and other healthful compounds in a single glass is amazing. This dairy alternative will provide the body with:

Vitamins like Vitamin A, E, B-12, folate and riboflavinMinerals like calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron and zincAll 10 essential amino acidsProtein (4 grams per serving)Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids

Being this nutrient-rich, it is no wonder that hemp milk provides so many health benefits as well! Because of these nutrients, hemp milk can help to strengthen the body’s immune system, develop glowing skin as well as strong and healthy hair and nails, a healthy heart and sharper cognitive skills, including learning and memory.

The recipe for making hemp milk at home is given below.

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup shelled organic hemp seeds
  • 5-6 cups purified water
  • Raw organic honey to taste

Directions

Add shelled seeds and the water to a blender and process together until smooth. It is okay to use more or less water than the amount given, depending on the desired texture: more water will make the drink lighter, while less will give it a smoother and creamier taste. After this is done, add the honey to taste and process again. Decant into a pitcher and refrigerate. This will keep up to 3 days.

So for vegetarians and vegan and those who are allergic to or intolerant of dairy products, hemp milk is yet another way to avoid traditional cow’s milk while still enjoying the rich, creamy taste of “dairy” products. The amazing variety of nutrients it has and the health benefits it brings make sampling this dairy alternative well worth the effort.
