Clarity: 7 Unexpected Health Benefits Of Nutritional Ketosis Diet

The “keto” diet is any extremely low- or no-carbohydrate diet that forces the body into a state of ketosis. The “K-E,” or keto enteral, diet is a very low-calorie liquid form of this diet eaten through a feeding tube. Experts Healthline spoke with say the keto diet should only be used in very specific circumstances under medical supervision; none endorsed the enteral approach.

What is a Ketogenic Diet?

The most simple way to describe this diet/lifestyle, a ketogenic diet causes the body’s liver to produce ketone bodies, which results in utilizing fat instead of glucose as a primary source of energy. Restriction of carbs is necessary in order to trigger the ketone bodies production, and the amount of carbs should not exceed 20g a day. The ratio of Fat vs Protein and Carbs is very important.

Generally, the macronutrient ratio varies within the following ranges:

60-75% of calories from fat (or even more)
15-30% of calories from protein, and
5-10% of calories from carbs

A Ketogenic Diet: Your Body (and Brain) on Fat

When glucose reserves are low, your body takes action to create the fuel it needs to power the brain, organs and muscles. One way this happens is by converting protein to sugar – a process called gluconeogenesis.

Alternately, when lower amounts of protein are available, fats are converted to ketones, through a process called ketosis. These molecules act as a stand-in for some of the sugar required by the brain.

7 Unexpected Health Benefits Of Nutritional Ketosis Diet

Decrease in insulin levels
This results in a rapid breakdown of fatty acids. When insulin levels are high as a result of high carb diet, the body’s ability to break down fatty acids is being compromised. Low levels of insulin also supports the release of many useful hormones associated with muscle growth.

Muscle stiffness or joint pain
Also, if you’ve been wanting to get more flexible, to improve your yoga practice, this diet is going to give you the advantage that you need. Diets that are rich in carbs are known to contribute to stiff muscles and inflammation in joints.

Lower blood pressure
Low carb diets are very effective at reducing blood pressure. If you are taking any blood pressure medications, be aware that you might start feeling dizzy from too much medication while on a ketogenic diet plan. You may be able to reduce your BP meds (talk to your doctor first).

Heartburn relief
If you suffer from GERD or other heartburn issues, the symptoms should lessen or disappear. Heartburn, I believe, is a direct result of eating grain based foods, sugar and for some people, nightshade vegetables such as tomatoes. I also believe it is tied to problems with sleep apnea, as described above in the sleep section.

Digestion
Digestion and gut health get better. You will see a decrease in stomach pain, bloating, gas etc.. These are all associated with grain and sugar consumption.

Cholesterol
Cholesterol is made from excess glucose in the diet. As you eat less sugar creating foods, you do less damage to your arterial system and inflammation drops. Your cholesterol will drop as your body has less glucose from which to make it, and less need for repairing the damages of inflammatory chemicals.

Cancer Protection
Sugar feeds cancer cells causing them to proliferate. Therefore, a diet which eliminates sugar and other carbohydrates may be effective in reducing or fighting cancer. The regular cells found in our bodies are able to use fat for energy, but cancer cells cannot metabolically shift to use fat. Therefore, when cancer cells are starved of sugar they die.
