Frankincense Has Been Proven to be a Psychoactive Antidepressant

3 million people in the U.S. has a dysthymic disorder which is a less severe type of depression and over 40 million people report suffering from some form of severe anxiety. Today frankincense is not only recognized and used for a ceremonial role, but as turned into a form of therapy in treating depression and anxiety.

Mind Soothing Effects

Burning Frankincense in the form of incense has been a big part of religious and other cultural ceremonies for a millennium. Keep in mind that we are talking the burning of the resin, here, not the essential oil of frankincense. Now, biologists have learned that it is good for our brains too. Frankincense is actually made out of a resin from the Boswellia tree which is made into oils, incense, and is used in everything from helping your soul reach higher spiritual planes to medicinal uses.

Study Over Frankincense

Recently a team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University and the Hebrew University in Jerusalem did a study to see what the effects were of this age-old practice. They studied Frankincense to determine why it has psychoactive effects.

Frankincense Affecting The Mind

They found that the compound significantly affected areas in brain areas known to be involved in emotions as well as in nerve circuits that are affected by current anxiety and depression drugs. Incense from Frankincense directly affects a protein in the brain known as TRPV3. While we already knew that this protein affects our ability to feel warm sensations on our skin, it has a different warming effect on the mind.

Frankincense Psychoactive Antidepressant Effect

“In spite of information stemming from ancient texts, constituents of Bosweilla had not been investigated for psychoactivity,” said co-author of the study Raphael Mechoulam. “We found that incensole acetate, a Boswellia resin constituent, when tested in mice lowers anxiety and causes antidepressive-like behavior. Apparently, most present day worshipers assume that incense burning has only a symbolic meaning.”
