Everyone gets a headache from time to time. Most headaches are not serious and will pass with time.

However, they can be annoying and may cause us to lose concentration and not be able to enjoy what we are doing. While there are many over the counter and prescription medications for headaches they are not without side effects.

There are natural ways to get rid of a headache that you can try. Many natural headache remedies work better than drug medications and can effectively get rid of a headache quickly.

Traditional headache specialists have started recommending alternative therapies for migraine sufferers, who often have to soldier through debilitating headaches without much relief.

8 Natural Remedies for Headaches

Ginger Tea
Crush up an inch of ginger root and add it to boiling water. This homemade tea reduces inflammation in about the same amount of time as it would take an aspirin to work. It has been used for centuries in Asia to treat a number of ailments.

Feverfew
One of the oldest herbal remedies for migraines, this plant can be used in many forms, included steeped in tea or even eaten raw, it contains a powerful chemical called parthenolide, which has been linked to warding off migraines.

Butterbur
Used medicinally since the middle ages, butterbur extract can be taken daily to help reduce the number and severity of headache attacks. It is available commercially in capsules, powder, tincture, or other forms and is thought to have both antispasmodic effects and anti-inflammatory properties.

Lemon
Fresh lemon juice with tea is one of the best cures for headaches. The lemon peel is also very useful. Pound the lemon peel into a fine paste and apply it as a plaster on the forehead.

Aromatherapy
Boil a handful of rosemary in a liter of water and place it in a bowl after it boils. Place a towel over your head and inhale the steam for as long as you can. Keep repeating this until the headache goes away. Peppermint, lavender, eucalyptus, sandalwood, and basil work well also.

Willow bark
Known as the natural alternative to aspirin, willow bark is actually what aspirin was originally made from. It contains the pain-relieving compound salicin, and is one of the most common natural remedies for headaches.

Caffeine
Caffeine is a double-edged sword,” says Mauskop. If you’re too dependent on multiple cups of coffee a day (or even frequent doses of certain headache medications formulated with caffeine) you’re likely to experience rebound headaches when the jolt starts to wane. However, in small doses, a little bit can help reduce pain.

Magnesium
When taken daily, magnesium may help reduce the frequency of migraines. The mineral helps to calm nerves, which tend to get overexcited during a migraine. Some studies have found that migraine sufferers tend to be deficient in magnesium. You’ll likely need more than the average multi-vitamin contains or about 400 to 600 milligrams a day. Look for amino acid-chelated magnesium (many brands contain magnesium oxide, which is not absorbed as well). You can also increase your magnesium by eating dark green vegetables, nuts and seeds.
