Massive, Life-Threatening Medication Errors in Mental Health Facilities

Are you or a loved one interested in entering a mental health unit and/or are in need of medication? You might want to watch out; mental health services aren’t as trustworthy as you think.

According to the International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, medication errors are extremely frequent upon admission to mental health units.

The journal’s study analyzed 377 patients admitted to an assessment ward in 2012, finding that a full 56 percent of them–212 patients–had some kind of medication error.

This is important because had those errors not been spotted and corrected further down the line, up to 75 percent of patients admitted could have suffered harm in the form of medications that would have hurt them.

The errors involved a wide variety of medications that affect various aspects of the body, including anti-psychotics, diabetes medicines, anti-Alzheimer’s medications, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and more.

If you or your loved one believe you need to be admitted to a mental health facility or in need of hospitalization, remember that you are always entitled to a second opinion. Make sure you are as informed as possible before you make any serious medical decisions. It could mean the difference between getting healthier and getting worse.

Ian Maidment, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy at Aston University, the research supervisor, said; “We found that medication errors may affect over half of patients admitted to NHS Mental Health Services. These errors were corrected by a simple pharmacy-led intervention. SEPT have a “gold standard” dedicated pharmacy service, which aims to review the medication for every admission, and stop errors from reaching the patient and causing harm. Worryingly, we don’t know how widespread such services are and recent national reports have identified a lack of Pharmacy Services in Mental Health.”

Dr Chris Fox, one of the researchers and a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the UEA (University of East Anglia)’s Norwich Medical School commented; “As a medic I am very concerned that these errors could have caused real harm and demonstrate the importance of a pro-active multi-disciplinary approach to medication management.”

Of course, there is also a HUGE need for non-medical remedies for mental health concerns. For example, did you know that there are natural ways to heal depression? The bottom line: you are responsible for your own health. It appears that you cannot count on the system to get things right.
