Natural remedies for diabetes and lowering blood sugar

Natural remedies for diabetes include food, herbs and supplements. With 23 million Americans diagnosed with diabetes and millions more undiagnosed, healthy foods and herbal remedies can offer healing health to diabetics and people wanting to lower their blood sugar.

Healthy Foods

A healthy diet can reverse the signs and symptoms of diabetes and lower blood sugar. The first step to establishing a healthy diet is to limit the intake of simple sugars and carbohydrates, increasing protein intake, and adding fiber. Avoid sugar and corn syrup to help stabilize the blood sugar. Eat a few small meals a day that each contain a small amount of protein and fiber. Fiber slows the uptake of sugar from foods.

Beans

Adding a half-cup of beans to the diet a day lowers blood sugar because beans contain protein as well as carbohydrates. The fiber from the beans also helps control blood sugar and lower cholesterol as well. Add twenty to thirty grams of fiber to the diet daily.

 Nuts

Nuts also contain fiber. Nuts also contain minerals such as magnesium and calcium, which are beneficial to diabetics. Nuts contain high levels of healthy fats as well.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C protects against diabetes, recent research has shown. Vitamin C also aids in building brain transmitters and the conversion of energy in the body. Vitamin C is not manufactured by the body so it much be added to the diet either by foods or supplementation. Fruits and vegetables are the most readily available sources of vitamin C, especially citrus fruits, such as grapefruits, lemons, and oranges. Cherries and grapes are also good sources of vitamin C. Juices contain vitamin C as well do whole fruits. Whole fruits are a good choice because fruits contain other nutrients, vitamins and fiber as well.

 Bilberry

The herb Bilberry, or Vaccinium myrtillus is a traditional herbal medicine that has been used to treat diabetes. Extracts of this herb can be taken in doses of 160 milligrams a day to address the symptoms of diabetes.

Gymnema sylvestre

Gymnema sylvestre is Ayurvedic herb used in India to treat diabetes. The Indian name for this herb is Gurmar. Scientists have discovered that 400 mg a day of Gymnema sylvestre can stabilize blood sugar in diabetics.

Adding healthy foods and vegetables can help a diabetic to stabilize their blood sugar and avoid the use of insulin. Always consult with a medical professional before making dietary changes, especially if you are currently on insulin. A number of vitamin companies make products that combine the best herbs and vitamins to help lower blood sugar. See my online pharmacy for more information.
