Natural remedies treat adrenal fatigue

Adrenal fatigue occurs when stress wears you down and your body can no longer trigger the “fight or flight” instinct. The adrenal glands secrete hormones that put the body into overdrive when needed. The old expression, “too pooped to pop,” describes the sensation of adrenal overload and adrenal fatigue. Natural remedies such as herbs and vitamins, along with calming lifestyle changes, can reduce adrenal fatigue.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include exhaustion, memory lapses, low blood pressure, insomnia, and even dizziness or fainting. Adrenal fatigue can contribute to feelings of ennui and depression. Dehydration can occur, because the adrenal glands manufacture aldosterone, which is used to balance sodium and potassium in the blood. Allergies can be caused by adrenal fatigue, because when the adrenals are not fully functioning, they don’t produce the hydrochloric acid needed for digestion of proteins. This leads to poor digestion, leaky gut syndrome and food allergies.

Herbal remedies for adrenal fatigue

A group of herbs called adaptogens are useful in treating adrenal fatigue. They have been shown to help the body adapt, hence their name. Ashwagandha is an herb used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Both ashwagandha and rhodiola can be taken to help restore adrenal function and calm the nervous system.

GABA and L-Tryptophan reduce stress and treat adrenal fatigue

GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid. GABA) is a neurotransmitter that has been shown to have a calming effect on the nervous system. GABA is naturally found in bananas, walnuts, lentils, oats and almonds, or can taken as a nutritional supplement. L-tryptophan is an amino acid that is a precursor to the neurotransmitters melatonin and serotonin. Turkey is a natural source of tryptophan, and the reason some people feel sleepy after eating turkey. Grains and pasta also contain tryptophan.

Lifestyle to reduce stress and adrenal fatigue

Resting is the best way to sooth the nervous system and heal the adrenals. Meditation and yoga are important part of daily life, even more so during stressful times. Make sure to get enough sleep and to stay hydrated.

Reduce stress, add functional foods and supplements, and institute calming portions of each day, and the adrenals will restore themselves back to normal function.
