The Tale of Sagittarius: The Sagittarian Constellation
The Sagittarian Constellation is a very unique constellation as it is one of the few constellations that are actually represented as a hybrid animal. The Centaur; half horse half mankind. But why the centaur? And what significance does the centaur create as well as what is the significance of the bow and arrow the centaur aims?

History
According to the Ancient Babylonians and early Sumerians the constellation of Sagittarius was represented by the God Nergal. The depiction of Nergal was that of a centaur however, it also had wings, two heads; one man and one panther, had a scorpion stinger for a tale and fired arrows from his bow. It was believed that the early depiction of this constellation also included the constellation of Scorpio. The early Sumerians also believed that this constellation represented the “Forefather” or “Chief Ancestor” to early mankind.

According to the Ancient Greeks the Sagittarian constellation has been recognized since the time of Herakles. The first origin story tells the tale of the Centaur Chiron, who unlike his race was a very wise, noble, and intellectual centaur. One day a fury broke out and in order to keep the centaurs back Herakles fired poison arrows at the enemy. One of the arrows accidentally struck Chiron, Herakles’ mentor and friend, and killed him. Herakles’ distraught compelled Zeus to place Chiron amongst the stars where he may be forever remembered. However, it is believed that Chiron is placed amongst the stars under the constellation of “centaurus” and that the Sagittarius constellation actually represents Crotus, son of Pan, a half man half goat demigod, and inventor of archery.
