A variety of essential oils can be used for many different things, especially repelling pests that are commonly found around the home and the yard. Citronella, lemongrass, cedar wood, eucalyptus, bergamot, lavender, pennyroyal, and peppermint oils are all known to have properties that help to repel insects and other vermin. These oils can often be used by themselves, but may also be used in mixtures together to combat specific pests.
Acquire dried cloves, and place a handful of them inside of a bowl. To this, add a few drops of clove oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil, or lavender oil. The oils should be refreshed regularly, and the bowl of cloves with oils should be placed in an area that flies would linger like a front door, kitchen, or garage. This will repel and drive away any potential flies from entering the home.
Gather a few cotton balls and put a few drops of peppermint, spearmint, or eucalyptus oil on them. Position these where the mice are suspected to be. This would be areas such as behind a refrigerator, washer, or dryer. Place them in areas such as the garage or attic, and look for places that mice could be entering the home. These oil soaked cotton balls will deter mice from entering, but further measures will be required.
Place a couple of drops of citronella oil on a few cotton balls. Along with this, consider adding lemongrass oil or peppermint oil to the cotton ball. These soaked cotton balls can be placed in areas like under a sink or inside of cupboards. A spray solution can be made by mixing one half cup of water with 10 drops of peppermint oil with 5 drops of cypress essential oil. You can spray this solution wherever cockroaches have been seen.
Rather than using harmful chemicals in and around your home to get rid of ants, opt to use peppermint essential oil. This can be sprinkled in the bathroom or in the kitchen, in areas that ants frequently visit.
A few drops of lemongrass oil or citronella oil inside of an oil burner can repel mosquitoes. Another method is to procure a ribbon and place 5 drops each of lemongrass oil, citronella oil, lavender oil, and peppermint oil on the ribbon. Hang this ribbon in doorways or in windows. A large piece of ribbon cover more area and will have the potential to repel a larger area from annoying mosquitoes.
To use oils to combat aphids, mix 10 drops of rosemary oil and 10 drops of lavender oil in 4 cups (1 liter) of salt water. Spray this concoction on the plants that are affected. Many plants will be safe to spray with the solution. Neem oil is another product that has properties to repel insects and keep aphid reproduction to a minimum. The neem oil has a taste that is bitter, so any pests that eat plants that have been sprayed with it will not attack the plants.
