Why Whole Food Supplements Are Healthier Than Isolated Nutrients

Americans are buying more vitamins and supplements to help them stay healthy.

But many of our chronic diseases and health concerns are not going away. Why?

Because isolated nutrients don’t do the same work that whole food and whole food supplements  do.

Whole food provides real healing power that goes far beyond isolated compounds.

And whole food supplements – made from concentrated whole foods – contain the same complex mix of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, co-factors, trace minerals, unique phytonutrients, special fats and more – that you’d find in the original food.

It’s the difference between the music created by a full orchestra and that of one violin.

Whole food supplements can support your health in ways isolated nutrients can never do.

Here are a couple of examples of how this works . . .

Whole Food Supplements Balance Nutrition

A navel orange contains a whopping 23 grams of sugar! Wow – that’s a lot of sugar. In fact it’s the same amount of sugar in 6 Oreo cookies. Does that surprise you?

You probably thought fruit was a good alternative to eating cookies. Well, there’s more to this story . . .

Fruit not only has sugar, it has lots of fiber. The fiber in fruits slows down your body’s absorption of the fruit’s sugars. Thanks to fiber, your body can access the energizing sweetness of fruits without overwhelming the bloodstream with sugar.

Better yet, in addition to fiber, fruit contributes phytonutrients to the mix. These phytonutrients can help the body in a number of ways. But most noticeably, in this instance, the antioxidants in fruit can help clean up some of the free radicals released when the sugar in fruits is metabolized as fuel.

To sum it up, the fiber and phytonutrients in fruit balances out the potential damaging effects of the sugar in fruits.

Whole Food Supplements Allow Your Body To Pick And Choose

In contrast to isolated compounds, whole food supplements have built-in mechanisms that can help ensure your body only takes in and activates the nutrition it needs.

What do I mean? A good example of this is the nutrient beta-carotene, the precursor to vitamin A. Several studies have shown that people who have more beta-carotene rich foods in their diet and higher levels of beta-carotene in their blood, have lower risk for cancer and other diseases.[1]

However two large-scale studies showed a very different picture. In these studies, smokers who used supplemental beta-carotene had a 16-28% increased risk of mortality from lung cancer than smokers who didn’t supplement with beta-carotene. Why is this?

While a definitive answer has yet to be determined, many health experts agree on one possible explanation. Beta-carotene is part of a group of over 50 different nutrients called carotenoids. This group includes nutrients like alpha-carotene, beta cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein and zeoxanthin. High doses of isolated beta-carotene work differently in the body than the mixture of carotenoids found in many beta-carotene-rich foods.

In the previous studies showing a correlation between beta-carotene intake and a lower risk of lung cancer, the lowest risk groups had high levels of many carotenoids – not just beta-carotene.[2]

In fact beta-carotene may even block the absorption of other important carotenoids.

When you eat a whole food supplement, like chlorella, you get a whole mix of carotenoids. This mix allows your body to be selective. Your body can choose the carotenoid that works best for different purposes.

Adaptogens, like the herb eleuthero, offer another incredible example of this smart nutritional feat . . . Adaptogens support the body under stressful conditions. But interestingly enough they do this in two – almost contradictory – ways. First, adaptogens contain compounds that act like stress hormones and take the burden off the adrenal glands to produce these hormones. Adaptogens make it less stressful – in other words – for the body to respond to stress.

But then, when the stressful event is over, adaptogens also provide chemical signals that help the body shut the stress response down more quickly. Again, preserving your body’s energy and minimizing the impact of stress on your body.[3]

Whole food supplements contain an array of nutrients that your body can pick and choose among to find the ones it needs.

You Get The Complex Nutrition Your Body Can Use In Whole Food Supplements

Whole food supplements – like chlorella tablets and eleuthero tablets – have the kind of nutrition that has evolved alongside our bodies over millions of years.

Whole food supplements have nutrition our bodies know how to use.

And whole food nutrition gives our bodies the full array of nutrients our body needs in the right proportions.

When you use whole food nutrition you tap into the real healing power of food.
