5 Ways to Eat And Drink Turmeric

If you have an extra bottle of turmeric in your cupboard that you are wanting to use up or simply want to add this spice into your diet on a more frequent basis because of everything you have heard about its health benefits, try these recipes below. These are wonderful ways to eat (and drink!) one of the healthiest spices ever!

Tofu Scramble

Ingredients :

  • 1 package tofu
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • ½ cup onion, diced
  • ¾ cup red bell pepper, chopped
  • ½ cup green pepper, chopped
  • ¼ tsp coriander
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp turmeric

Press tofu gently with paper towels to remove excess moisture, then place in a bowl and mash with a fork until its texture is crumbly. Heat oil in skillet and saute vegetables until soft. Add all spices expect the turmeric. After a minute, stir in the mashed tofu and 2 Tbsp water and cook mixture for a 1-2 more minutes. Serve immediately with tortillas, avocadoes and green onion.

Fragrant Yellow Rice

Ingredients :

  • 2 cups jasmine rice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 inch cinnamon stick
  • 3 whole cloves
  • ¾ tsp turmeric
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Rinse rice, then add the rice, water, spices and salt to a pot and bring to boil over a high heat. Cover, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat, let set for 10 minutes, then uncover and removed the bay leaf, cinnamon stick and cloves. Add oil and stir, then serve.

Cauliflower “Steaks”

Ingredients :

  • 1 large head of cauliflower
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp turmeric

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cut cauliflower from top to base into three thick “steaks”. Season with salt and pepper to taste on both sides. Heat 1 Tbsp olive oil in skillet and sear the steaks until golden brown, then gently transfer to a baking sheet. Whisk the remaining Tbsp of olive oil in with the spices and baste the cauliflower, then cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Works great over rice, couscous or quinoa.

Morning Smoothie

Ingredients :

  • 1 large handful of leafy greens like spinach or kale
  • 1 peeled and frozen banana, chopped
  • 1 cup unsweetened coconut water
  • 2 Tbsp almond butter
  • 1 Tbsp flax seed oil
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon

Put all ingredients in blender and process until smooth.

Turmeric-Ginger Tea

Ingredients :

  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ tsp turmeric
  • ¼ tsp ginger
  • Soy milk and honey, to taste

Bring water to boil in a saucepan. Add spices, then reduce heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Add soy milk, then strain into a tea cup. Add honey to taste and enjoy.
